From the Manager...

Hello and welcome to Holmers Headlines, the 1st edition of 2020…I can't believe it is already February!

Firstly, can I please let you know that we are aware of the recent flooding and hope all our members are safe. Holmer is open as normal, though we will be cancelling some classes next week to allow Holmer Academy Pre-School to use the space. If you need any more information about this, please contact reception on 01432 370 222.
 
I was recently catching up on some old episodes of the Australian reality show, Bondi Rescue. I was amazed by a rescue that was carried out by the Lifeguards who had an unresponsive casualty, who was not breathing. The team carried out CPR with a Defibrillator, on a beach with thousands of onlookers. Miraculously, the casualty survived and was able to tell an amazing story. The lifeguard team there clearly train very hard to be able to deal with all eventualities. Now sadly we’re not on a beach (and we’re not in Australia!), however it got me thinking about how important it is to qualify, develop and grow our team at Holmer Park. To ensure you have full confidence in us, please see the training and qualifications our team has:

  • Club Duty Managers have a First Aid qualification and we always have two Pool Lifeguards on duty that hold the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ). We train and assess the competency of our lifeguards on a monthly basis too.
  • Our Swimming Pool Duty Managers all hold the Level 3 in Pool Plant Operations qualification (PPO).
  • In the gym we have Level 2 and Level 3 instructors whose qualifications are all recognised by REPS (register of exercise professionals).
  • Head Chef Ben is currently studying his Level 3 in Kitchen Management and our chefs have at least a Level 2 Food Safety qualification.
  • Our Food and Beverage team members are all currently studying a Food Allergy awareness course.
  • At reception we have team members with Level 3 in Customer Service.
  • Our Housekeepers are trained in working at heights and COSHH.
  • Our Spa Therapist are Level 3 qualified and we have an in-depth training school in partnership with Temple Spa that ensures are teams deliver the best possible service.
  • I (as do some of our duty managers) have a Level 3 Management qualification through the ILM as well as First Aid, Level 2 Gym, PPO, NPLQ and this year I will be studying for the NEBOSH general certificate, a health and safety qualification.

Training and development is important to us at Holmer Park and we're pleased to say all of our team recognises the importance of health and safety.
 
New Studio and classes (including the booking system)
I am very happy with how the new studio turned out and I hope you are too. I think back to only a few months ago where Maintenance Manager Reg was working away on his bench! I know he misses that work space but he has been very supportive of this project and was heavily involved in the conversion. What this has allowed us to achieve is a hugely increased group fitness timetable. I was recently going back though some documents and noted that in 2015 we had 34 classes on the timetable... we now have 86 classes. That is a 152% increase on the amount of classes at Holmer Park, every single week!
 
We do constantly review the timetable, and having reviewed the numbers we have changed the 20:15 Dancefit class on Fridays to Pilates as we are aware that Pilates is becoming very popular. Having taken advice from the instructor of Dynamic Pilates, we will also be changing that to a Standard Pilates class.
 
I am aware that the booking system with it's current opening time of 06:30 am 2 weeks in advance works for some club members but not all. Last year we published our class booking T&Cs and that certainly helped clear up some misunderstandings and ensured all club members were informed of the rules.  However of late, we have received feedback that does suggest that this time is no longer suitable. We always said we would review this and therefore as a Management team, we have concluded that we should allow you, our club members, to make that decision. Therefore please see below a link to a survey below which has various times to rank. Before completing please consider the following:
 

The change may mean booking opens during a class. For example, if we said it was to open at 7:00am, there are often ongoing classes at this time.
The change may mean booking opens in the evening, which may not be suitable for all.
If voted, the time may remain as it currently is.

Finally, I just wanted to say thank you for your patience at this, our busiest time of the year. We are trying hard to ensure we manage this time smoothly and if you have any suggestions please let me know. To confirm, currently our weekend evening membership, interregnum and child memberships remain full and closed. We will review our membership numbers over the next 4 weeks and decide whether a full closure is necessary.

Hello, Head Chef Ben here...

I regret that rapidly rising costs have left us with no option but to make minor price amendments to the Orchard Café food and drinks menu. We have made every attempt to avoid this, but having invested heavily to improve our service in recent years we want to continue to improve.
 
Therefore, with effect from Monday 2nd of March new prices will come into effect.
 
I am happy to confirm that we will continue to offer the 10%-member food discount for yet another year and will continue to offer our hot drinks loyalty scheme.
 
We will be reviewing the Orchard Café menu with some exciting new dishes, including more Vegan options and healthy new smoothies/ drinks which you can find here https://press-london.com/pages/about-us-press-london. In addition, we will be making changes to the poolside menu and what we offer at the poolside.
 
Finally, I just want to say thank you for your support, I really do appreciate it. Myself and the Orchard Café team look forward to continuing to look after you in 2020.
