Blog: Finding Exercise You Actually Enjoy
Tuesday, 13 January 2026

For many people, exercise can feel like something you should do rather than something you genuinely look forward to. Videos of intense workouts, rigid routines, or even just unrealistic expectations from social media and TV can make movement feel intimidating or even unenjoyable. Then, if you're already feeling tired, busy, or out of rhythm, it's just a non-starter.
Here's the thing though: movement was never meant to be one-size-fits-all. Some people LOVE running, others are still haunted by primary school cross country (was that a little too specific?). At the end of the day, exercise is about supporting your body, lifting your mood, and fitting into your life in a way that feels sustainable.
If you haven't yet found the exercise that feels like "you" yet, well, here are some tips that may have you dancing, lifting or running in no-time...
Redefining What “Exercise” Looks Like
Let's start with the basics: Exercise doesn't have to mean high-intensity workouts or long gym sessions. Ignore what Instagram might tell you.
Movement comes in many forms, and every single one of them can count. Instead of a HIIT class or spin class, you might prefer one of the following:
- A gentle swim
- A walk outdoors
- Stretching
- Yoga
- Dancing
When movement feels accessible and supportive, it's far more likely to become part of your routine. That said, don't judge the HIIT or spin class before trying!
Enjoyment Matters More Than Intensity
The most effective exercise is the kind you'll actually do, and keep doing. When movement feels enjoyable rather than exhausting, it supports both physical and mental wellbeing. It also leads to a more positive relationship with your body, which is really important.
Enjoyment encourages long-term habits, which is what we want. Forcing yourself through routines you dislike often leads to burnout, and you're much more likely to stop if you don't enjoy it.
If you're wanting to build intensity and go for the more intense workouts you've watched people do online or talk about among friends, you still need to start slow and build your body up. Finding something you enjoy at the beginning with help you get to your end goal.
Listening to Your Body
Your body's needs can change day to day, and that's totally normal. Some days you'll have more energy for longer exercise, while others you might need more gentle movement or even a rest. This is all OK and even regular gym-goers have rest days.
Movement should work with your body, not against it. Don't be afraid to adjust the intensity when you feel tired, and remember it's OK to rest without feeling guilty about it.
Try Fitness Classes to Discover What You Enjoy
If you're unsure where to start with movement, fitness classes can be a great way to explore different styles of exercise in a supportive environment. Classes take the guesswork out of planning a workout and offer structure, guidance, and motivation, all without the pressure of doing it alone.
At Holmer Park, our fitness classes are included with membership, meaning there's no additional cost to try something new. This makes it extra easy to experiment! You could try a gentle class focused on mobility and stretching, or opt for something more energetic if you're feeling up to it. Sometimes the most enjoyable movement is the one you didn't expect, so don't be afraid to try something you'd never thought to try!
Trying a variety of classes can help you discover what types of movement you genuinely enjoy. It can also help you find motivation through shared energy and routine, AND when the classes are already included in membership, there is no pressure to commit to one style straight away.
Movement for Every Body
Ultimately, exercise isn't about achieving a certain look or meeting a specific standard. It's about supporting your health and wellbeing. When you remove pressure and expectations, movement becomes something you can enjoy, rather than avoid.
The best movement routine is one that fits into your lifestyle, not one that disrupts it. Choose activities that feel realistic for your schedule and focus on how movement makes you feel, not how it looks.
Finding exercise you actually enjoy often begins when you stop trying to do what you think you should, and start doing what works for you!
