Hereford Spa Blog - is coconut the wonder nut?

03 Nov 2016

The humble coconut has become something of a beauty hero in the last couple of years. Coconut is used in a wide range of beauty products and for good reason; it’s naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, and along with being beneficial for the hair and skin it smells incredible!

Coconut oil can be found in any supermarket or health food shop and is relatively cheap compared to most beauty products and cosmetics. It’s also cost effective as a little goes a very long way.

Our Hereford spa therapists have rounded up some of the best coconut oil tips and tricks, so that you too can harness the power of coconut for your hair and beauty routine.

A deep conditioning treatment

Coconut oil can work wonders for dry and damaged hair because the fatty acids it contains act to soften the strands. Rub a small amount between your hands and then apply to your hair from the roots to the ends, one section at a time, and comb through. The longer you leave it in the better! Wrap your hair in a towel for at least 15 minutes and follow with a gentle shampoo.

For extremely dry hair, apply before bed and shampoo out in the morning. This also works well if you suffer from dandruff. Remember to make sure you thoroughly wash away all the oil – heavy, greasy hair is probably not the look you're going for!

Night cream

Mix coconut oil with your favourite moisturiser! Another talent those miraculous fatty acids have is helping to reinforce the skin’s natural lipid barrier, which protects your skin from irritation and infection. Including coconut oil in your face care routine helps lock in moisture, promoting hydration, while the antioxidants are great for smoothing fine lines and wrinkles – just like our Collagen Infusion facial treatment, which has wonderful anti-aging properties!

Shaving balm

Due to the lubricating nature of coconut oil, it makes for a great shaving balm. Conventional shaving creams and gels are usually expensive cocktails of chemicals but you really don’t need them to get a nice clean shave on your legs or underarms. Coconut oil is a great alternative that’s inexpensive, naturally antimicrobial, and it smells so good. Plus, its skin-soothing properties will leave your legs looking shiny and hydrated!

If you prefer to wax, you can still get a wonderful hydrated after-effect when you come to Holmer Park and experience one of our premier waxing treatments.

Lip balm

Coconut oil is the ideal remedy for chapped lips, moisturising and protecting them from the elements. As it is semi-solid at room temperature it can be easily packed into a miniature jar and smoothed over lips throughout the day.

Eye makeup remover

It may surprise you but coconut oil is really effective at removing eye makeup. Put a little on a cotton pad and gently sweep it over your eyes then once you’re done simply wash your face as usual. The oil does an amazing job of breaking down waxy, inky products and even removes waterproof mascara! Unlike some other makeup removers which can be very harsh and drying, it leaves the delicate skin around your eyes hydrated too. If you want to enhance your eyes further, why not try our nourishing and brightening Sensational Eyes treatment? Active complexes in our products firm up the delicate eye area and reduce the appearance of fine lines!

As we head into Winter again, cold air and dry heating can upset the fragile balance of our skin and hair so it’s especially important to take good care of them. We can all take steps to look after our hair and skin daily, but if you’d like to turn to Holmer Park Spa and Health Club for a special treatment, please fill out the enquiry form below and we'll get in touch:

We look forward to pampering you soon at Holmer Park
