What are the benefits of Personal Trainers? We caught up with Luke Bennett, one of Holmer Park's Personal Trainers to find out.

Why Use A Personal Trainer?

Training with me will enable you to take the most direct route to results. As a qualified fitness professional I specialise in many different areas such as weight management, injury rehabilitation, sports specific training, sports massage, nutrition and flexibility.

I developed my understanding of health and fitness through achieving a scholarship at the University of the West of England, Hartbury, representing the Gloucester RFC Youth Academy, where I also studied a BSc (Hons) Degree in Sports Conditioning, Coaching & Rehabilitation Sciences. During this time I gained qualifications and experience as a fitness instructor working in sports centres/health. I provided analysis sessions and sports massage therapy on work placements at Oxford united FC, Worcester RFC and Gloucester RFC.

When Should I Choose Personal Training?

IF YOU ARE A NEW EXERCISER - You will gain the knowledge to feel confident and safe in a new environment. I will ensure you are exercising in a correct and safe way.

IF YOU ARE RETURNING TO EXERCISE – I will find the safest and quickest route to matching and exceeding your previous fitness levels.

IF YOU HAVE SEEN A PLATEAU IN RESULTS OR MOTIVATION - This can often happen when routines are not changed or progressed in an effective way.

IF YOU ARE A MATURE EXERCISER - I can help with heart management, flexibility and strengthening yourself safely.

IF YOU ARE A SPORTS ENTHUSIAST - Performance and focused exercise programmes will take your ability to a new high.

IF YOU ARE IN REHABILITATION - A link up with physiotherapists can tackle injuries. Inactivity can only delay recovery. Introduction of a programme of careful movement and exercise can accelerate your body’s ability to repair. Why not combine it with a massage to aid recovery?

IF YOU ARE SIMPLY LOOKING FOR FUN! - Motivation, partner training, new ideas and fresh challenges can make all the difference in reaching your goals.

Luke devised a training programme at my request during September 2006. I specifically requested that the training be geared towards a mountaineering expedition planned for February 2007. My fitness history has been one of a lifetime trainer in most sports, and a long time gym user. I had performed as an elite athlete in athletics for seven years and had a professional coach during that period so was used to the requirements and demands that coaching and personal training can bring.

The programme devised is progressive, with the early phases developed around strength endurance, power and dynamic performance. To fit the schedule into my working cycle Luke devised a fortnightly training programme which is manageable and suits my work life balance.

I was tested at the beginning of the programme and felt that I showed an already reasonable level of fitness, but that my core strength wasn’t suitable for the kind of mountaineering expedition that I was planning. Luke tailored my programme to work on core strength and a higher power weight ratio that is demanded by climbing.

My second set of tests at the end of October showed significant levels of improvement in the targeted areas, and also showed that I was on the right track.

I am now near the end of the strength endurance phase and will now start to target strength and power weight ratio in time for my expedition in Feb 07. During this time Luke has been fully supportive without interfering, and has allowed me to get on with it, which suits my training style. He always shows excellent professional knowledge and I trust and respect his judgment. I hope to continue with Luke as my personal trainer into the future.
